The reinforcements reach the barricade at the edge of the square just in time to suppress what could have been a Soviet breakthrough on the German left flank.
The battlelines have been temporarily drawn and the men on both sides have identified the best positions to shelter in and fire from.
Throughout the battlefield personal duels are unfolding.
For the Soviets this is a convenient game. When one man falls another one takes his place.
On the German side, the vacancy goes unfilled and that just means that the Soviets can start to gang up on individual German soldiers.
On the German side ammo is now running very low. Some men improvise by using panzerfausts as anti-personnel weapons.
The PAK is also being aimed at the positions concealing Soviet riflemen, but they only have a handful of shells left.
The grenade remains a very helpful weapon on both sides. But for the Germans, those are also in short supply now, even after harvesting any that could be found among their dead comrades.
The shouts for additional ammo become louder and louder. The situation is becoming dire. Desperation is setting in.
The end feels near.
