Attack on Modellbaudorf - Part VIII : The Soviets Prevail

A Soviet grenade thrower manages to sneak behind the German machine gun team covering the approach through the streets of the old town. By defending this route, the Germans forced the Soviets into the buildings and through the rubble where they got bogged down. But now, a well placed grenade and the subsequent deadly spray of a PPSh-41 sub-machinegun takes out the team for good. The German right flank is now wide open.

As the Soviets begin to roll up the German defenders from the flank, the German casualties start to mount.

With many Germans out of ammo, and the Soviets charging forward, the battle turns into a brutal hand to hand struggle.

The Germans recognize that their defense has been unhinged.
At first, they begin to fall back to wherever their Kameraden still hold.

Some of them begin to abandon their posts altogether.
Initially the officers try to keep them in check, firing at them if needed.

But soon there is an all-out rout underway.

The Soviets surge forward across the entire battlefield, spilling into the rail yard.

They fire from a distance, but don't bother to give chase to the Germans.

They capture the industrial sector with little opposition.

Finally, the prize they came seeking is theirs.

The Germans knew from the beginning how this battle would end. All they could do was delay the Soviet advance. And that they did, even if only for half a day. They will now regroup and prepare to defend some other town close by. They will trade another couple hundred lives for an extra day or two. And they will continue to play this hopeless game until they run out of towns or lives to trade. Fortunately for everyone, the end is truly near.

  1. Well, that has been the most entertaining thing on my internet this week, superb stuff!

Have you tried doing smoke and explosions? If you get poly fibre, like for quilting, you can shape tufts and colour it with pastels to be smoke and explosions, can look good.

    1. Thanks! Glad you liked it and thanks a lot for all the feedback!
I have not tried the fire/explosion effect, but I agree that it could add a lot to the scenes. And since I am sure I can build them detachable, I could have all sort of things on fire/exploding! I think I will give it a try at some point.
