Somewhere between enthralling and captivating lies the term to describe what I feel when I see a neat, orderly formation of soldiers, all marching in step, with crisp uniforms, straight backs, radiating a martial atmosphere. No wonder soldiers are included even in non-military parades and even school marching bands try to mimic that style. I am very well aware of its effect, like a siren's call, and yet I am unable to escape it, drawn to them with fascination. Maybe it is the volume of sharply uniformed, look-alike men, maybe the symmetry of the formation, perhaps the rhythm and cadence of the steps, maybe all of it together that makes it so alluring. These formations and the parading are far from the fighting nature of soldiering and a lot closer to an aesthetic experience. Perhaps that's why it can be so dangerously seductive. Either that or maybe I just suffer from OCD?!? :-) In this series of pictures I have made an attempt at replicating that experience using plastic toy soldiers. Producing this post felt more like working on an art project. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did lining them up and taking their pictures!
